Pitched roof under the rafter installation

PREPARING THE MATERIALS

You will need the following to install the Thermano panels on your pitched roof:

a) SEALING TAPE

  • size: 75 mm or 120 mm wide (50 m/roll).
  • average consumption: 1.5 m for each 1 m2 of the Thermano panel (when sealing on one side only)

b) FASTENING SCREWS 

Fix the Thermano panels under the rafters with screws and disc washers (the type commonly used for façade shell installation). These screws will only fasten the Thermano panels until the final fixing with the drywall fasteners.

  • Calculating the screw length:
  • Thermano thickness + 20 mm
  • quantity: 1 to 2 per each Thermano panel (0.5 pcs. per 1 m2 of Thermano panels)

C) VAPOUR BARRIER FILM (OPTIONAL – THERMANO IS GAS-TIGHT) 

 

  • quantity: 1 m2 per 1 m2 of Thermano panels.

 

D) ATTIC FINISH SYSTEM 

The system comprises:

  • horizontal slats
  • hangers
  • drywall boards
  • screws
  • The quantity of materials to be used will depend on the instructions from the drywall supplier and the drywall installation system.

E) DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE

For installing the vapour barrier film and sealing its overlaps.

INSTALLATION

STAGE 1

Start by bolting the Thermano panels to the rafters from inside the attic. Use screws with disc washers. The Thermano panels are very light, so 1 or 2 screws per panel will be enough for installation fastening. You can lay the panels on either side (front or back). The laying sequence is not specifically defined; you can start either from the roof slope centre or edges.

STAGE 2

Seal the panel joints with the aluminium tape.

STAGE 3

Lay the vapour barrier film on the inner side of the Thermano panels (i.e. the attic side). Avoid mechanical fasteners. Use adhesive bonding to install the membrane.

The Thermano panels with their joints sealed with the aluminium tape form a gas-tight partition and essentially do not require any vapour barrier; however, there is a risk of gas seal breach (due to the movement of the roof structure) and the vapour barrier film is highly recommended as a redundancy. Apply the film with the double-sided tape. The proper fastening at the subsequent stages will be the slats of the drywall system.

STAGE 4

Note that the roof thermal insulation system must be physically joined to the thermal insulation of the walls; when installing the under the rafter insulation, you need to bypass the wall plate by laying the Thermano panels to form a joint with the wall insulation system (i.e. the insulation layer must be continuous).]

STAGE 5

Install the drywall framework profiles. Each drywall manufacturer has a proprietary installation system, so follow the system instructions.

The profiles are usually fastened with long woodscrews and crosswise to the rafters with a spacing of ca. 50 cm, and the screws must pierce through the Thermano layer. Install the screws and profiles in perpendicular to the rafters. Regular drywall boards are fastened with short screws to these profile slats, with a spacing of ca. 150 mm.

Wooden boarding and other finish wall cladding are a common replacement for drywall boards.
